In 1983, Bhanu Atthya, an Indian woman got the first Oscar in India for costume designing. It was the first time when an Indian got the prestigious award.

Costume Designer Bhanu Athaiya was born on April 28, 1929. Now he is 90 years old. His full name is Bhanumathi Annasaheb Rajodaya. She enjoyed drawing in her childhood very much. Bhanu had designed the outfit for the International Film ‘Gandhi’ and his work was appreciated everywhere throughout the world. Richard Attenborough’s film base on Gandhi and his works.

Bhanu’s full name is Bhanumathi Annasaheb Rajopadhyay. She was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. She was number three in her seven sisters. Bhanu’s father’s name was Anasaheb and he used to do printing work. Bhanu’s father passed away when he was just 9 years of age.

Bhanu began her education in the field of art since youth. A teacher of art used to come home to teach her. Afterward, after finishing his teaching, she joined the Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai. From here he finished his Master’s in fine arts and won the Gold Medal. Bhanu also worked as a fashion illustrator in many Women’s Magazines.
